Lauren Shapiro is not your traditional ceramist. Ellie Hayworth drove 30+ miles south of Miami into the “whispering” ecosystem of the Everglades. During the time of the visit, Lauren was Artist in Residence with the Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) and was experimenting with new forms of research and artistic techniques to produce her latest bodies of artwork. Her ceramics apply technology to uncover and communicate insights from the natural world, and she often collaborates with scientists to influence projects by the diverse ecosystems of South Florida and beyond.
Lauren generously invited Ellie Hayworth and the Haywire to record in the AIRIE cabin situated in the heart of the Everglades. The conversation covered topics including the artist’s fascination with nature, her work with scientists as artistic explorer, her role with the community ceramics studio at the Bakehouse Art Center in Miami, and her forthcoming bodies of work, including public art commissions, soon to launch in Miami, Florida.
