Art as Action
Antonia Wright on Performance, Activism, and the Human Condition
Ellie Hayworth visited Antonia Wright in her studio and home along the Miami River to discuss her varied and esteemed practice as an artist.
Ellie Hayworth visited Antonia Wright in her studio and home along the Miami River to discuss her varied and esteemed practice as an artist. Through a multimedia practice of video, performance, photography, sound, light, and sculpture, Wright responds to extremes of emotion, control, and violence in relation to systems of power. The body is a principal element in her work.
Antonia discusses her early interest in the written word and pursuit of poetry, before directing her attention to performance art, video, and installation. She traces her days as an early artist pursuing new opportunities, the vulnerability, strength, and commitment applied to her performance-based works, her work in the community with Planned Parenthood, Locust Projects, and Lotus House, in addition to her role as mother in this contemporary moment.
The conversation is fused with resonant anecdotes, a dose of humor, and an all-around engaging account offered by one of the premiere artists of our day. We are big fans of Antonia’s work — and it shows!
