Andrew Reed: A Miami Native’s Vision

Andrew Reed was born in Miami and was immersed in art from an early age due to his parents’ active involvement in the art world; Reed’s mother, Stefanie Block Reed, leads VIP relations for Art Basel Miami Beach. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Politics, Philosophy, Economics, and Art History before pursuing Master’s degree in Art History from The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Following his academic pursuits, Andrew worked at Sotheby’s, David Zwirner, and David Kordansky, where he gained significant expertise and knowledge in online sales, gallery expansion, and the auction market. Reed then returned to Miami, curating “pop-up” exhibitions and bringing to Miami his unique perspective built upon his previous experience, education, and upbringing. The success of these shows encouraged Reed to open a gallery of his own, the Andrew Reed Gallery, in Allapattah.

The Allapattah District: A Blossoming Artistic Nucleus

One of Miami’s oldest neighborhoods, Allapattah, where the Andrew Reed Gallery is located, has become a burgeoning artistic and cultural hub in Miami. Situated west of Wynwood and north of Little Havana along the Miami River, Allapattah has long been known for its large Dominican and Central American community and grain warehouses. In 2019, the Rubell Museum and El Espacio 23 opened in Allapattah, followed by Superblue in 2021, and most recently the Marquez Arts Projects in September 2023. In addition, the Museum of Sex unveiled to the public its new space in Allapattah just last month. Many commercial galleries have also begun to populate the area, such as Voloshyn Gallery, Mindy Solomon Gallery, La Cometa, and KDR305. The area’s proximity to Wynwood has allowed it to easily attract an art-curious audience while forging a unique cultural identity in the Miami landscape.

The Andrew Reed Gallery: Fostering Artistic Dialogue

As Miami and Allapattah continue to evolve as global, artistic and cultural centers, Reed is committed to showcasing both domestic and international artists, creating a platform for both creators and the wider community. The Andrew Reed Gallery works with emerging and mid-career artists, including Dan Attoe, Kate Bickmore, and Patricia Geyerhahn. The gallery’s inaugural show featured works by Dan Attoe and Anthony Miller centered around the language of landscape. The gallery has since had a solo exhibition of paintings and watercolors by Kate Bickmore and a survey of Laurie Simmons’ photography. Currently on view until mid-March, “Push and Pull” features twelve artists whose work span fifty years, drawing inspiration from Hans Hofman’s manifesto on abstraction.
